Medhira Samarasinghe who won the Girls Un18 title three days ago is aiming to clinch a double and has put herself in contention when she qualified to the U16 semi-finals defeating Oshani Wickramasinghe in the quarter-final encounter which was played in the mornings session at the SLTA hard courts in Greenpath, Colombo yesterday.

Medhira had a successful campaign in the U18 age group where she put in a fine display defeating third seed Thewuni Devaraja in the quarter-final and then overcame the top seed Thisuri Molligoda in the semi final before going on to clinch the U18 title.

The 99th Men’s and Women’s National Championship too got underway with the first round matches being worked off in the morning and evening sessions.

In the men’s singles defending champion Dineshkanthan Thangarajah along with Sanka Athukorale (second seed), Nishangan Nadarajah who won the U18 singles title (third seed), Tanveer Ashiq, Amresh Jayawickrama began their campaign on a winning note. The championship will be continued today.
