Ex-cop’s gang of six caught selling land acquired on forged deeds

A gang led by an ex-policeman, who were involved in forging deeds and acquiring land in Colombo belonging to persons currently living overseas, has been arrested by the Colombo Fraud Bureau, a senior police officer said.

Investigations commenced when a Sri Lankan doctor living in the UK was alerted by a friend that his 17-perch block at Aloe Avenue, Kollupitiya, had been illegally acquired and occupied by a garment factory, Senior DIG Anura Senanayaka said.

forged deed prepared by the gang.

The gang of six had introduced forged documents at the Colombo Municipal Council and the Land Registrar, in support of their ownership of the land for the past 30 years. Signatures on the documents too had been forged.

The gang had also illegally acquired a land in Jampettah Street, Kotahena, valued at Rs 6 million, and attempted to sell the land.
Colombo Fraud Bureau OIC P.P.A. Wijenayaka told the Sunday Times that, though one of the main gangs had been arrested, there were several more gangs operating in Colombo, involved in similar activities.
