Military parade in Matara to mark victory over terrorism

The Victory parade will begin at 7 a.m. today in Matara town with the participation of over 7,000 soldiers along with another 600 officers belonging to the tri-forces.

The parade held in celebration of the National War Heroes Commemoration Month with the contribution of the tri-services, Police and Civil Security Department, will also include close to 120 military vehicles and 30 naval craft and 30 aircraft.
Organisers of the event, Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaska, Law and Peace Ministry Secretary, Maj. Gen. (Retd) Nanda Mallawarachchi, Chief of Defence Staff, General Jagath Jayasuriya, Army Commander, Lt. Gen. Daya Ratnayake, Navy Commander, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage, Air Force Commander, Air Marshal K.A. Gunatilleke, Inspector General of Police, N.K. Illangakoon, and Civil Security Dept, Director General, Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris were in Matara to oversee the parade rehearsals yesterday (17).

Religious dignitaries, President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Prime Minister, the Speaker, the Chief Justice, President’s Secretary, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Parliamentarians, Heads of State Agencies and Diplomats will be in attendance at today’s event.
