14-month-old female infant dies after falling from the 3rd floor
View(s):A 14-month-old female infant died of a fall from the 3rd floor of a house in Maligawatta.
The infant, Mariam Mohammad, daughter of a Muslim clergyman, passed away in the early hours of last Thursday, after receiving treatment for two weeks at the National Hospital’s Accident Ward.
Giving evidence at the Coroner’s court, Malaigawatte Police said that the incident happened while the mother of the child went to use the toilet.
The infant had walked towards the balcony, climbed the parapet and fallen from a height of 50 feet.
The child was first admitted to a children’s Hospital in serious condition, and later transferred to the National Hospital last Wednesday.
The body was handed over to the parents without a postmortem. Colombo City Coroner Dr Ashroof Rumi said that death occurred due to severe injuries to her head caused by the fall.
Enquirer, Dr Rumi ordered the Maligawatte police to present the diseased infant’s mother for questioning on Thursday (29).
