Following the huge success of ‘Abhitha Diyaniya’, a Korean serial drama dubbed in to Sinahala, Rupavahini releases another similar venture with ‘Dirya Diyaniya’, a drama based on a true story of a woman who lived in Jeju Island in Joseaon Dynasty. Originally known as ‘The Great Merchant’ a Korean serialized television drama was aired on KBSI channel in South Korea in 2010.

Kim Man-deok was born into the noble class. Her mother was from Jeju island and her father was a high-ranking government official who met Kim’s mother during the time he was exiled on Jeju island. Kim Man deok’s biological mother, Yi Eun Hong did not tell her father, Kim Eung Ryul, about her pregnancy as he and his clan could be punished by execution for inappropriate conduct during his exile. At birth, Kim was named Yi Hong. Her mother was assassinated soon after her birth. She left her daughter a flute that would one day help her reconnect to her father.

Adopted by a former palace lady, Kim ends up a successful merchant and rebuilt business ethics in lawless Jeju island. But when the island is struck by a deadly famine in 1795, Kim sells all her assets and donate to save millions of lives.

Two hundred years later in 1978, a memorial was created for Kim Man-deok on Jeju island and annually Jeju island presents the “Man-deok award” to two outstanding women in philanthropy. Kim Man-deok made herself a great merchant with a strong will and efforts even under the feudal system of Joseon dynasty when the idea that men are superior to women was widespread.

The dubbing director and editor of ‘Diriya Diyani’ is Athula Ransirilal while he is being assisted by Anura Dharmasena and Ranjith de Silva. Grace Ariyawimal, Saranga Disasekara, Thilaka Ranasinghe, Parakrama Perera, Rohana Siriwardena, Kamal Deshapriya, Melani Asoka, Somadasa Suriyarachchi and large number of young and old dubbing artistes joined the production.

The drama serial is to be telecast at 6.30 pm from Monday to Friday on Rupavahini.
