Education Minister Bandula Gunawardana yesterday vowed to impose maximum punishment on teachers who do not comply with standard transfer procedures issued by the ministry from time to time.

The Minister’s statement comes barely a day after a female teacher attached to Royal College, Colombo, staged a rooftop protest against her transfer to another school located a little over a kilometer away. He said the protesting teacher Kalyani Dissnayake had acted in an unethical manner and in the process had brought the profession into disrepute and shame. “A teacher is required to set a disciplined example to the students at all times, but the incident at Royal College on Tuesday was just the opposite”, he told a gathering of village level officials at Homagama yesterday.

He said a full inquiry has been initiated into the incident, and if the teacher is found to have violated standard procedures of the education system, then she will be severely dealt with.“This teacher was given a transfer to a school located just one kilometer away from Royal College. She had been attached to Royal College for more than eight years and had been placed on the ‘excess’ teacher category, where she had remained idle for nearly one year on full pay,” the Minister said. ”Officials, and that includes school teachers and principals, who neglect their responsibilities, are not suitable for State service, and it is in this backdrop that I have instructed the relevant authorities to take necessary disciplinary action against the teacher who climbed the roof of the school, as she has seriously violated the rules and regulations of the State service through her action”, he said. The teacher, for her part, claimed that she was victimised by the school’s principal for refusing to tow the line on certain issues, and therefore, was keen on getting her out of the school.Ms Dissanayake was transferred along with three others.
