Parents have an important role to play in guiding their children to choose a fulfilling and successful professional career, underscored Mr. Aruna Alwis, Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka).

He emphasized that a parent’s responsibility does not end as soon as the child’s school education ends; instead parents should guide their children on the importance of the many career options available in the market today.

“Often children are not knowledgeable and experienced enough to choose a career on their own. They get duped by the many attractive advertisements they see in the media or follow their friends’ career choices. Therefore it is important for parents to step in and make their children understand the importance of choosing a profession which will be both gratifying and successful on the long run,” Mr. Alwis said.

He however noted that the problem with parents was that at a very early stage of their child’s life they keep insisting that the child should either be a doctor or engineer based on society perspectives, but what is important is to guide the child not force the child to do something against his/her interest of preference.

“Today we have many marketable qualifications and professions which command an important place in the corporate world and it is important to help your child choose something he is good at as well as something he will also enjoy. A profession is lifelong, and therefore it’s important to choose it based on practicality,” he stressed.

According to the CA Sri Lanka CEO, chartered accountants have always played an inspirational role across the world for many decades and in Sri Lanka too they have demonstrated excellent business leadership.

CA Sri Lanka which is one of the largest and foremost professional organizations in the country with over 4300 chartered accountants who are members and 41,000 students who are presently following the institute’s globally qualified chartered accountancy qualification.

“An impressive number of CA Sri Lanka members serve on the Board of Management in a large number of companies which are listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange,” he stressed.

“Chartered accountants are no longer restricted to the conventional number crunching positions. Today they are Managing Directors, CEOs, CFOs and directors in top companies. Chartered accountants are globally sought and the demand for them consistently increases because of their unique knowledge and style of conduct,”Mr. Alwis noted.

Chartered accountants hold a prestigious standing in society and even during times of financial crisis’s chartered accountants enjoy job security unlike many other professions.

The CA Sri Lanka CEO noted that the institute has always been at the forefront in offering various recognized qualifications aimed at the professional advancement of those in the accounting, finance and non-accounting spheres and apart from its famous professional qualification, the institute also offers a degree in applied accounting which has been approved by the University Grants Commission.

“Parents hold the key to their child’s professional success. Such decisions cannot be taken overnight, but one needs to weigh the pros and cons and decide what’s best for one’s child and this should include job security, fulfillment as well as long term success,” he added.
