SLIIT hosted the 8th International Conference on Computer Science and Education (ICCSE) 2013 between the 26th and 28th April in Colombo. The conference was organized by the National Research Council of Computer Education in colleges and universities – China, with technical co-sponsorship provided by the IEEE Sri Lanka Section. Sri Lankan Airlines came on board as the Official Airline for the event.

Initiated in Xiamen – China in 2006, the International Conference on Computer Science and Education was subsequently held all over the world, attracting many internationally renowned experts, academics, technicians and scientists in the fields of Information Technology and Education from diverse foreign institutions, higher education institutes and enterprises.

This broad international influence of ICCSE has resulted in collaborative efforts to publish numerous international journals, with the conference acting as a forum to recommend a considerable proportion of manuscripts to the International Journal of Systems and Control (IJSC) and the Journal of Computers (JCP).

Commenting in this regard, Professor Lalith Gamage, General Chair – ICCSE 2013 said, “Sri Lanka at present is being transformed into a strategically important growth centre in the region under the government’s rapid development efforts including its efforts to be one of the knowledge hubs in the region. Each year, this conference brings together scientists and practising engineers around the world to discuss and share knowledge in the latest trends and findings in the field of computer science and education. The conference program has been compiled with three keynote speeches, sixteen technical sessions and eleven special online sessions.

The contributed papers were selected from 618 submissions from 15 countries and regions and 293 high quality manuscripts were accepted for presentation in the final technical program through a rigorous review process conducted by the conference Program Committee”.

Hon. Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Technology, Research and Atomic Energy graced the event as Chief Guest. Speaking at the conference, he stated, “I appreciate the timely efforts of SLIIT to attract this International Conference on Computer Science and Education to Colombo and to make all arrangements to host it successfully. Today academia plays a key role in development. To govern an educational system which fosters research and innovation requires a talented pool of academics who possess a well-equipped research background. It is my view that Sri Lanka must now focus on developing the critical mass of academics with comprehensive research background who can support such an education system. The investment in research and development in Sri Lanka has been around 0.15% of GDP, one of the lowest in the region for several years. This figure for developed countries is, I believe around 2.3% and around 1% for developing countries. Our present aim is to progressively increase the investment for science and technology up to 1.5% of the GDP by the year 2016 with the public sector contribution being at least 1%. In this context, we very much value conferences of this nature. Your deliberations with our academic community and industry leaders will build up mutually beneficial relationships and research collaborations which I have no doubt will create progressive research and development pathways in Sri Lanka in the future”.

The conference unfolded through key technical sessions held by visiting specialists, including Clarence W. de Silva, Professor and Senior Canada Research Chair in Mechatronics and Industrial Automation at The University of British Columbia – Canada, Asok Ray, Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Pennsylvania State University – USA and Zhong Wende, Professor in Communication Engineering at Nanyang Technological University – Singapore.
