The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the largest and fastest growing global professional accountancy body, has enough success stories of their students to prove their position in the market. Offering world class qualification in flexible hours, ACCA has opened many doors to a world of unlimited possibilities.

Amongst them is Ravith Goonewardene, a student of ACCA ,working at Ernst & Young in the Business Risk Advisory division, who admits that he gained not only theoretical and practical knowledge at ACCA but also to dream big and to aspire for greater things. Having chosen the field of accounting to further his learning owing to the interest he had in the subject during his A/L, his preference of ACCA over other institutes offering similar qualifications was a result of the body’s credentials, he said. “I needed a globally recognized qualification and, I chose ACCA as my first preference considering the fact that ACCA offered Oxford Brookes BSC Honours degree in Applied Accounting, which enabled me to obtain both a professional and an academic qualification in one go.”
Speaking on the qualification, he noted that at ACCA the focus is more on the technicalities of accountancy while covering all other aspects needed such as company law, taxation, audit, financial management, performance management, etc which are prerequisites to become a fully fledged accountant. The course also delves into areas of IASs and IFRSs and even promotes criticism on certain standards. “ACCA fosters knowledge on other related information beyond what is covered in the syllabus. This teaches us the importance of being updated on the financial happenings in the world by referring to technical articles.”

Noting that he started off his course at Mercury Institute of Management and then moved to Knowledge Base Business School (KBBS) for the professional level, he stated that both institutes were well stocked with the latest study materials, revision packs and tutor notes. “Even when I was unable to attend lecturers at certain times, they were considerate enough to provide me with necessary notes. Further, the management of both institutes were extremely friendly and we were treated with great respect. In addition, ACCA also provided students facilities ranging from original study material to study room facilities to career guidance. “Ravith has so far completed five out of nine essential requirements in the Practical Experience Requirement module and one out of the four optional requirements. “Currently, I’m working on an assignment in the banking sector and I believe I’ll be able to submit three more requirements at the end of the assignment.” Further, he will be completing 36 months of experience in August and therefore, be able to apply for membership by the end of this year.

“In my current position at Ernest & Young, I mainly handle risk related audits such as system studies and improvements, internal risk assessments, forensic investigations and a few external audits,” Ravith acknowledged. “My immediate goal would be to become a Manager and handle a portfolio of assignments by myself. I also like to gain exposure in Treasury Management and specialise in that area as I found it to be interesting while doing ACCA. However my ultimate goal is to become an entrepreneur and build a business empire, as I believe in the concept of dreaming big.The ACCA qualification helps us reach our goals by moulding us professionally as well as personally to reach for greater heights than we think possible,” he concluded.
