Parliament will on Tuesday debate a no-confidence motion on Foreign Employment Promotion Minister Dilan Perera, prompted by the execution in Saudi Arabia of Lankan housemaid Rizana Nafeek. The motion signed by 14 UNP MPs accuses the Minister of failing to extend meaningful support in any manner to Ms. Nafeek, who was executed in Saudi Arabia earlier this year after being convicted of killing an infant in her care.

The debate will be held from 2 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. The motion states that Rizana Nafeek was executed in Saudi Arabia following summary proceedings for a crime for which she was not responsible in any manner and the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau, which comes under the purview of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera failed to extend meaningful support in any manner to the housemaid and as a result she had to die an untimely and tragic death.

The motion accuses the Minister of totally mismanaging the issue while engaging in a futile attempt to shift the blame squarely on the Government of Saudi Arabia instead of directly shouldering the responsibility for this faux pas while confining himself only to issuing statements.

The UNP MPs who have signed the motion include MPs Ajith P. Perera, Joseph Michael Perera, Ranjan Ramanayake, Ravi Karunanayake, Lakshman Kiriella, Niroshan Perera, Buddhika Pathirana, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Thalatha Atukorale, D. M. Swaminathan, Champika Premadasa, Anoma Gamage, Jayalath Jayawardana and Gamini Jayawickrama Perera.
