The University of Colombo will be conducting the Sri Lankan leg of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2013 at its School of Computing auditorium on April 10, the competition’s organisers said. The local stage of this competition, first held domestically in 2005, initially utilised a judging panel of Sri Lankan software professionals to whittle down a pool of shortlisted finalists until just one team was selected, only in the category of software design, which then represented the country at Microsoft’s annual global Imagine Cup competition.

Further, the statement also added that, this year, “over 700 participants from state universities and private education institutions in Sri Lanka have participated in the local competition. At the final phase, which is to be held on April 10, 14 teams will compete, aiming to win the respective categories and also to enter into the worldwide finals which will be held in St. Petersburg, Russia”.

Additionally, the statement also revealed that, in 2013, the competition would take on a “new dimension, allowing students to compete under three different categories namely, World Citizenship, Innovation and Games… Of the 14 teams selected for the national competition, two will compete under the games category, six under World Citizenship and six under Innovation.

Three categories will be judged by three different panels of judges who have experience and expertise in the industry”.

Elaborating, the statement also indicated that the “Innovation category will honour the most creative, groundbreaking or inspired software application.

The judging parameters for the ‘Innovation Category’ will be innovation, impact and execution… The Citizenship category will honour the software application with the greatest potential to make a positive contribution to the betterment of humanity, with judging parameters involving impact, feasibility and execution… The Games category will honour the best game with commercial viability. This category will be judged based on fun, execution, innovation and business viability”.
