“Medicine is my profession and music is my passion,” says Dr. Manella Joseph, a senior consultant pathologist at the Sri Jayawardanapura Hospital and a one time member of the Winslow Six. The singing group brought together her siblings – four sisters and a brother – and was formed when she was just 17. Though she is in her sixties now and a grandmother of 2, Dr. Joseph’s love of music never dimmed and she would end up penning a number of original songs in both Sinhala and English. She released an album of her own music in 2011 titled ‘60 years young.’ Now, she’s gearing up for a concert.

“It’s a solo concert with guest artists backed by some of the finest musicians of the country,” Dr. Joseph told the Sunday Times. As an amateur musician, the concert represents an opportunity to perform live and to connect with the fans she’s won over the years. “It was my dream to have a solo concert,” she says. Her playlist will include a selection of her original songs and “golden oldies” from the oeuvre of Tony Brent who Dr. Joseph counts as a great influence on her own music and that of the Winslow Six. She promises to also perform some of the more popular Winslow Six covers from their heyday in the 70s.

The proceeds of this show will be entirely directed towards renovating the labour room at Kethumathy Hospital in Panadura. “I feel happy that I am able to realise my dream by this performance and channel its financial benefits to a worthy cause,” Dr. Joseph said.
