The National Law Conference (NLC) for this year will open its doors to industry specialists and non-lawyers from various sectors across the island. The conference will be held under the theme ‘The Way Forward: Legal Challenges in a Developing Landscape’ on March 18 and 19 at the Kingsbury Hotel, formerly Ceylon Intercontinental in Colombo Fort.

The incumbent Chief Justice Mohan Pieris is invited as the chief guest for the event and Professor Walter Woon , former Attorney General of Singapore will be delivering the keynote speech at the conference on ‘Legal and regulatory framework: how good it should be to achieve development goals? Lessons to be learned from Singapore’
NLC committee chairman Kuvera de Zoysa said the NLC conference is considered the most prestigious event in the Bar Association of Sri Lanka’s calendar. It is the forum for discussing current and topical issues with a legal perspective.

“This conference provides an opportunity for judges, legal academics, practising lawyers, corporate lawyers, corporate personalities, investors, decision makers and opinion leaders from across the nation to meet and discuss current issues” he added. The NLC will highlight the legal, socio-economic and commercial challenges faced by the stake-holders and people related to individual industries in line with the four pillars identified to be the four areas of the development of Sri Lanka – aviation, maritime, commerce and education.

When the Sunday Times asked the NLC committee chairman regarding whether an invitation was sent to former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake, he said that she will not be invited for the event. “If we invite the former Chief Justice Bandaranayake, we will have to invite all the past Chief Justices. That has not been the practice in the past,” he added.
