The book ‘History of Volleyball’ Spikers delve into their past

A 300-paged book titled ‘Volleyball Then to Now’ which showcases the “History of Volleyball” is due to be launched on February 12 at the Galle Face Hotel.

Presented by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and edited by Susil Ranasinghe, General

Secretary of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, the book is a long felt need in regard to Volleyball which is Sri Lanka’s national game. It covers all activities and aspects pertaining to Volleyball in Sri Lanka from the year 1895 to 2011.

It also touches quite comprehensively on how the game of Volleyball was created. It also contains all other aspects pertaining to Volleyball in whichever perspective it is viewed locally or in the international scenario. The statistics and data included are most interesting, more so since it is interspersed with over 75 photographs.

In addition, Sri Lanka’s relationship with the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC), the African Confederation of Volleyball (CAVB), the South American Volleyball Confederation (CSV), European Volleyball Confederation (CEV), North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA), Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is spelt out in detail.

This book is a must for not only members of the Volleyball fraternity but also for sports lovers, especially those who maintain libraries.

This opportunity is also taken to felicitate 122 Veteran National Volleyball Players who have contributed their might from 1951 to 1991. They include all Past Captains of the Sri Lanka National Volleyball Team namely: L.A.D. Premaratne (1955), George Fernando (1970), L.P. Perera (1973-1974), Nanda Ganegoda (1970-1973), Sophaya Dharmasena (1973), Yasa Ramachandra (1973), Wijesiri Amarasinghe (1981), J. Siriwardena (1981), Jayantha Perera (1973), Ranthilaka Jayaweera (1982-1990), Madhuka Kiriella (1981), J. Siriwardena (1982), Jayasiri Perera (1984), Ananada Wanthilaka

(1985-1989), Kalika Wasanthapriya (1993-2006) and Renuka Abeygunawardena Yapa (1990-1991).

The Keynote Address will be made by the Chief Guest, Minister of Sports, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Dilan Perera President of the Volleyball Federation and Minister of Foreign Promotion and Welfare and Hemasiri Fernando, President of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka will also grace the occasion.

Also making their presence felt will be Past Presidents and Secretaries of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation.

The Past Presidents namely are: Charitha Ratwatte, Tilak Iddamalgoda, Ashoka Wadigamangawa, Ronnie de Mel and Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawarathna.
