A supermarket chain titled ‘Star United’ has emerged and run by a group of retail distributors of various products styled the Retailers Alliance Ltd.
The group plans to establish 500 modern retail units countrywide with the backing of Ceylon Biscuits Ltd aimed at getting a foothold in the booming retail business, company officials said.
As an initial step, six outlets titled Star United Hewage Family Super at Kandy, Katugastota and Barigama; Star United Singhe Family Super at Digana and Manikhinna; and Star United Dissanayake Family Super at Nalanda were set up recently on the same day, they disclosed.
The traditional boutiques (kade’s) will also be upgraded, in order to compete with the modern retailing formats.
The Star United chain of retail outlets will sell essential commodities and other items maintaining quality, consistency and reliability at affordable prices, officials disclosed.
The number of supermarkets is increasing rapidly with Cargills Food City having over 150 outlets, Keells Super (45 to 50 outlets), Arpico Supercentre’s (8 outlets), Laugfs Supermarkets (25 to 30 outlets) and Lak Sathosa (over 225 outlets).
