Dozens of disgruntled depositors of the failed Golden Key (GK) credit card company were on a protest opposite the official residence of Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake this week demanding the authorities to mete out justice for them as they have lost faith on the judiciary.

Pix by Athula Devapriya shows protestors camped outside the CJ’s residence and a GK depositor (below) reading some protest literature.

President of All GK Depositors Association Dushyanthi Hapugoda told the Business Times, that they will continue their protest till the Chief Justice steps down as they cannot expect justice from a panel of judges appointed by her to hear their Fundamental Rights case on February 18.

They also staged a protest march on Tuesday from the GK head office at Bambalapitiya and handed over petitions to the UN Office, the Chinese Embassy and the British High Commission and state media institutions, SLBC, SLRC and ITN highlighting the injustice caused to them by the Chief Justice through the reconstitution of the Supreme Court bench hearing their case, she revealed. They specially drew the attention of the British High Commission about Sicille Kotelawala, wife of disgraced, former Ceylinco Group chairman Lalith Kotelawela who is absconding in London with an Interpol warrant for her arrest.

Over 9200 depositors are languishing and are unable to meet their day-to-day needs after being deprived of their savings and have no other source of income. Depositors have so far been given only Rs. 200,000 which is a fraction of their deposits which runs into millions of rupees.
