Some two thousand depositors of the failed Golden Key company gathered in front of the Supreme Court complex on Wednesday, smashing coconuts protesting against the Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.

They urged that hearing in their Fundamental Rights petition fixed for December 4 be postponed until the conclusion of the impeachment proceedings against the Chief Justice by the Parliamentary Select Committee.

President of the Golden Key Depositors Society Wasantha Gunathilake said that they have lost faith in the 3- member panel of Supreme Court Judges appointed by the Chief Justice whose involvement in a Ceylinco property deal has been cited in the impeachment charges.

He revealed that around 2000 depositors participated in the protest, said to be the largest gathering of any Golden Key protest. Lawyers watching the protest said some of the protestors appeared to be pro-government supporters and not genuine depositors. Chairperson of Golden Key All Depositors Association Dushanthi Hapugoda told Business Times that they cannot expect justice from the present panel of judges as they fear impartiality.

She also noted that that the lawyers who appeared for Lalith Kotelawala and other accused in the Golden Key trial are now appearing on behalf of the Chief Justice in the impeachment proceedings.
