A Sri Lankan apparel sector trade union has joined in condemning a devastating garment factory fire in Bangladesh which killed over 100 workers last week.

Anton Marcus, Joint Secretary of the local FTZ&GSEU and EXCO member of the Geneva-based IndustriALL Global Union said in a letter to another Bangladesh union, that “it’s high time for us to uplift the existing joint campaign in order to prevent the repetition of such disasters.”

He expressed shock at the disaster which “was due to gross negligence of the authorities including the brands’ buyers and suppliers”.

He said this issue would be taken up at the forthcoming EXCO meeting of the Geneva-based union on 11-12 December.
