Lyceum International School, Wattala stood in prime position to defend their Inter-International Swimming Championship crown after recording an impressive tally of 505 points, after the competition’s first day at the Sugathadasa Stadium pool yesterday.

They benefited from a string of superlative performances by their junior swimmers as well as several strong swims in the senior age groups.
Their counterparts from Nugegoda though are sure to test them today- the competition’s final day- after registering 433 points at the end of day one.
Littered with numerous keenly-contested preliminary races, the championships’ opening day saw several outstanding swimmers annex their places in today’s finals.

Among them was top national prospect Mathew Abeysinghe, swimming for Asian International School, who streaked to qualification for the finals of the boys 50 m butterfly in the 16 and over age group, and set a new record in the process.

He touched home in 27:14, comfortably ahead of Binupa Hettiarachchi of Lyceum Nugegoda and Dilshan Jayawickrama of Lyceum Wattala, both of whom finished in times of 28:71 and 30:94 respectively.

His team-mates from AIS, Machiko Raheem and Kimiko Raheem too displayed their prodigious ability by blowing their competition out of the water.
Kimiko stormed to wins in the girls 12-13 200 meter individual medley (2:50:77) and the 50 meter butterfly (32:47) of the same age group, while her elder sister, Machiko, claimed victory in the girls 16 and over 200 meter individual medley (2:57:49 minutes) and 100 meter freestyle (1:04:44 ) events.
