Understanding the significance in the field of HRM in the corporate setting, the Department of Human Resource Management of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, of University of Kelaniya, made the first move towards postgraduate education in HRM in the Sri Lankan state university system in 2006 by offering a Postgraduate Diploma Qualification in HRM.

The University of Kelaniya proudly counts 134 years of yeoman service to the higher education system of the country after its inception in the year 1875 as a ‘Pirivena’ for Bhikku education. With the backing of a proud heritage, the University of Kelaniya is driven towards realizing the vision of being one of the leading universities in Asia, which will prepare internationally competitive graduates, promote values of a sustainable society and conduct outstanding research to improve the quality of life.

The Postgraduate degrees offered by the Faculties of this academic institution and their Departments is a major source of strength in realizing this vision of becoming a leading university in Asia.

Though there was no Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies at inception, the university can be really proud about the significant strides achieved by this young faculty and its four Departments.

The Department of Human Resource Management launched the Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management (PGDHRM) in 2006 with the objective of developing specialist knowledge and expertise in both managers from the industry and in academics.

This will produce aspiring managers of international repute by developing knowledge and expertise to lead their establishments to global heights. It is a pride that the Department has fulfilled the challenge posed on it by the public and the private sector of the country, as a renowned academic establishment.

It is a great height that it has achieved by being able to upgrade this PGDHRM programme into a Masters programme from year (2010), just after four years from the launch of the Course. PGDHRM consists 10 course units, offered during a period of one year with two semesters. This one year programme covers all the core areas that an expert in HR would need to essentially know. The second year, completion of which will lead to the award of the Masters Degree, consists of course units providing insight on several new and competitive course units. The Masters option possesses the real academic flavor with a blend of taught courses and compilation of Business Reports and / or a Dissertation. The facilitators or the panel of lecturers for the programme possess a high esteem in the academia and deliver to the maximum, giving the audience full reason to believe that all their efforts are exerted for the pleasure and upliftment of the audience. It is this quality of human resource that differentiates and puts us at a competitive advantage, and that is what we teach our students to do with regard to their places of employment. In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is. We have understood this very well and we are attempting to integrate theory with practical aspects of HR, by conducting a series of Workshops for the participants in partnership with local and multinational business giants.

We maintain strong foreign relations with the regional academic establishments of great ranking and that has delivered in enlightening the lives of our key stakeholders: the customers who are students enrolled with our PGDHRM Programme leading to Masters. It was a great achievement as we organized the foreign tour for our students in partnership with the Bangalore University, India, in (2010) where students got the opportunity of participating in forums and discussions with experts in the discipline with a field visit to HP- India. The programme quality was further enhanced this year (2011) by introducing a one week tour to Malaysia which exposed the students to the international corporate environment beyond South Asia. Students visited the Puthra University- Malaysia for a one week workshop and work is in progress with regard to signing a MOU between the two esteemed bodies as well as to implement a postgraduate student exchange programme.
It is a great opportunity for the young graduates and professionals to capitalize on the diverse features in our Masters programme and it is a new gateway for the corporate sector who are inspired in grooming their most valuable resource: human talent, to join hands in partnership with us to provide opportunities for their employees through a cost effective high quality learning gateway.

‘Some people make the world happen;
More watch the world happen;
Most wonder what happened.’

We at the Postgraduate Unit of the Department of HRM produce people who make the world happen.
