A young individual with diverse talents, Dinithi Nalleperuma, who currently works as a Research Engineer at National University of Singapore, opted for a degree in Software Engineering that she knew would be the stepping stone she required to a career of her choice and one that would provide her with many opportunities both locally and internationally. .

Having ascertained her study area for her chosen career path, Dinithi’s next step was to give thought as to which IT institute she would choose to further her education. She was then recommended the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) as it was well known for giving it’s past members tremendous sucess in their careers .

Having begun studies at IIT, Dinithi was quick to realize that the Institute truly lived up to its reputation. A fundamental difference she witnessed between IIT and other similar institutes was that they offered a well thought out programme structure and curriculum that included not only an extensive understanding of the theoretical subject matter but also the wide practical application of each subject. She affirmed that it had some great lecturers who were able to understand her abilities and capabilities and had a really good knowledge on the subject matters . They also urged students to improve their soft skills which have helped them tremendously in their careers. Facilities at the Institute were also pretty good, with a well equipped library and computer labs. She stated that “In addition, everyone at IIT was also very helpful and friendly at all times and I would say that it is a very good environment that has all required facilities , including the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports events and concerts.”

Dinithi also endorsed that she found she had a competitive edge over other applicants when she applied for her current job .She said “The advantage I had over other applicants, due to the degree I had obtained at IIT was that I had the knowledge on all the basic theories. On top of that, what helped me on the interviews are the soft skills that I gained from IIT. Also, the ability to think differently helped me to join National University of Singapore. ‘

Explaining about her work, she stated “I am working on many interesting projects, from which I lead one of the projects. The project aims to increase the emotional bond between the mother and her baby when the mother left for work, and the project includes a hardware component as well as a software component (my part) which would be implemented using Artificial Intelligence”.

Dinithi also acknowledged that “the Course structure at IIT pretty much contains all the fundamental knowledge for us to learn any computer language or theory faster. It is very suitable to work and succeed in the industry. From the beginning IIT trained us to read and learn. That really helps me to do the research work I am doing right now. Other than that, the leadership and teamwork practiced at IIT helps me a lot to be a good leader and a team member. The presentation skills I obtained from IIT helps me a lot to talk in large audiences. All in all, IIT was a great place which opened a lot of opportunities for me.”

Outlining her ambitions, her hopes and dreams of the future Dinithi said “I enjoy being in the research world and also I want to become a lecturer. In order to achieve these, I plan to do a PhD in the future. “

Therefore a qualification of this nature certainly creates a niche for any student. In addition, once qualified, I don’t think it is difficult for IIT students to find a job and I have found that in the industry, the institute has a good name where employers love to recruit people from IIT.
