The much looked forward to six a side schools cricket tournament organized by the Old Wesleyites Sports Club (OWSC) the only tournament of this nature to have the blessings of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association (SLSCA) is slotted to be held over tree days as in the past from October 12 to 14 at the Campbell Park.

The sought after event of the schools cricket calendar is being held for the 20th consecutive year and the OWSC along with one of the top most corporate of island in Ceylon Biscuits Limited (CBL) who are sponsoring the tournament for the fifth successive year have joined together to take the “Munchee Glucofit Sixes” to greater heights.

This was revealed at a press briefing held at the main hall of Wesley College on Tuesday amidst a large gathering. Richie Sappideen president of the OWSC speaking at the press briefing stated that this tournament gives an opportunity for all aspiring young cricketers around the island to showcase their talent.

This popular tournament gives young cricketers from every nook and corner of Sri Lanka to converge and share their knowledge and talent. This also gives an opportunity for lesser known schools in districts like Badulla, Trincomalee, Matara, Galle and Jaffna to brush shoulder with popular schools in the metropolis.

Speaking further he stressed that junior cricket should be focussed to turn out top cricketers to feed the national team in the future. The junior tournaments unlike the good old days are now on the reverse gear needing support to uplift the game. From the current Sri Lanka cricketers in the caliber of Mahela Jayawardena, T.M. principal of Wesley. “This tournament for the last 19 years has been a good platform for the youngsters to make friends from remote areas. The efforts of the OWSC officials who have not left any stone unturned and I take this opportunity to thank the sponsors CBL for giving their support to conduct this tournament with success”.The tournament as in the past will feature 36 teams, there will be the participation of teams from the North and East and also two teams from the international schools. These two will be the winner and runner up of the tournament held by the international school. The teams will be divided into four groups of nine teams each with four bye teams in each. All matches will be monitored and supervised by a three member technical committee and played with accordance to rules abided by the SLSCA.

The winners will get receive the Munchee Glucofit Champions trophy and the runner up the OWSC trophy. Apart from that individual awards will be presented to the best batsman, bowler, fielder, the highest number of sixes, man of the tournament, man of the final and the best outstation team.

Royal won the inaugural tournament in 1993 and again in 2001. Nalanda took the trophy on five occasions in 1996, 98, 2000, 2004 and 2005. Kalutara MV has won it twice in 1994 and 2006. The other winners were 1995 – Thurstan, 1997 and 2008 – Prince of Wales, 1999 – St Joseph’s, 2002 and 2009 – Lumbini MV, 2003 – De Mazenod, 2007 – Basilica College Ragama, 2010 – Richmond and 2011 – Mahanama.
