Vijaya College Matale and Musaeus College Colombo lifted the Under-19 boys and girls’ hockey titles respectively at the Astro Turf in Matale. The Under-19 hockey competitions were held in connection with the All-Island Schools Games 2012.

Boys champs Vijaya Matale

Seventeen boys’ teams and 15 girls’ teams qualified from the provinces with the exception of North Central and Eastern provinces participated in the three-day tournament conducted by the Ministry of Education together with Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association.

Matale Vijayans displaying superb skills annexed the boys’ title by defeating their hometown rivals fancied St. Thomas’ 4-2 on penalties after the final ended goalless at full time. D.J. Prakash and Ajith Manjula controlled the final with C.S. Ranatunga officiating as the third umpire.

In the semi-finals St. Thomas’ Matale powered by two goals from S.V.B. Hertah and a goal each from T.P. Welagedara and P.D. Ranaweera beat Nalanda College Colombo by 4-0. Vijaya Matale beat Wesley College Colombo by 4-3 on penalties after the game ended in a one-all draw. V.M. bandara scored a goal for Vijaya while Wesley scored their goal through A. Azmi. Buddhika Peiris of Vijaya Matale was adjudged the best player in the boys’ category.

Girls champs Musaeus Colombo

Centre forward Lithma Kumaradasa powered Musaeus College Colombo to wrap up the girls title with a one goal to nil win over Seetha Devi Girls School Kandy in the final. Lithma netted the golden winning goal during the extra time when the game ended scoreless at full time. Palitha Wasalage and Indika Jayawardane controlled the game.

In the semi-finals Seetha Devi beat Pushpadana Girls School Kandy by 1-0 after N.D. Weerasinghe scored the winning goal. Right inside Dinithi Sathyapala scored the solitary goal for Musaeus as they recorded a thrilling 1-0 win against Sri Sumangala Girls School Matale. Later in the decider for the girls third place, Sri Sumangala GS beat Pushpadana GS by 4-3 on penalties after the game ended in a thrilling one-all draw at full time.

S.L. Herath scored for Pushpadana while S. Sandaruwani scored for Sri Sumangala. Randima Hewage of Musaeus won the award for the best player in the girls’ category.
