‘Situ Medura’ conflicts of crumbling class

‘Situ Medura’, is a story about a crumbling feudal family of which the new generation drifts from the old and traditional way of living and gets emotionally attached to parties the system never approved of.
Directed by veteran teledrama maker Christy Shelton Fernando, the teleplay is now being telecast from Monday to Friday at 9 pm to 9.30 pm on Swarnavahini.

Staring in the lead are Menaka Rajapaksha and Nehara Pieris who play opposite each other while Menaka Maduwanthi, Cleitus Mendis, Sampath Tennakoon, Indika Ginige, Rebecca Nirmalee, Mahendra Weeraratne, Suneetha Wimalaweera and Nimal Anothy comprise the rest of the cast.
The story surrounds three families representing a feudal class, upcoming business class and an underprivileged in a rural village. It all begins when Devinda Denipitiya, son from the feudal class returns home after completing his engineering studies abroad and a welcome party is arranged to celebrate his arrival.

Devinda is already engaged to Kishani, the only daughter of the equally prominent Ranaweera family. The two families being friends, the engagement was arranged on the wishes of the parents.
However on the very day of the engagement, Devinda changes his mind when he meets Namalee and falls in love at first sight. Namalee is the daughter of their maid Hemalatha and awaits her advanced level results with much hopes to enter the university.

Devinda’s emotions for Namalee brings him the challenge of proving his true love and Namalee’s best friend Lionel hates the Denipitiyas as he thinks that they are responsible for the untimely death of their father. Further Namalee’s mother, Hemalatha who confides a secret relating to the feudal family and her family is strongly against any relationship between Devinda and her daughter.

Christy Shelton, started as an assistant director in Wasantha Obeysekara’s acclaimed movie ‘Palangetiyo’ (Fireflies) in 1981and has assisted in a number of fils under Titus Thotawatta, H. P. Premaratne and Malani Fonseka. He won the prestigious Presidential Awards in 1984 for his co-script for Obeysekara’s ‘Dadayama’ (The Hunt) and went on to direct three fils which lie to his credit. In the miniscreen Christy created 17 serialized TV dramas, 12 on-episodic dramas and 50 documentaries and a number of TV commercials.

The technicle crew for ‘Situmedua’ include Janaka Yahampath as director of photography, Aruna Premaratne as script writer, Nivantha Udagedara as editor and Dhanushka Hulangamuwa as make up artiste and Priyantha Ranasinghe as art director. To the music of Denister Perera, Samitha Mudunkotuwa did the playback.
