Army takes women’s football title

Sri Lanka Army Sports Club won the Women’s Open Club Football Tournament for 2011 defeating Air Force Sports Club 4-1 in the final played at the Police Park on August 30.

T.D.K. Samarasinghe scored two goals while Nanda Kuamri and Kanthi Mallika scored a goal apiece for the winning team. Air Force SC scored their solitary goal from the boots of Rashini Fernando. In the run to the final Army SC beat Navy SC by 3-2 on penalty shoot outs while Air Force SC beat Police SC by 1-0.

Sri Lanka Army SC earned major honours in the tournament as their custodian A.M.A.S. Wijeratne won the award for the best goalkeeper of the tournament. H.N.D. Fernando of Sri Lanka Army was named the most valuable player of the tournament.

A total of 12 teams took part at this year’s Women’s Open Club tournament which was organized by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka. Ranjani Jayakody, the Director General of Minister of Sports was the chief guest at the final.
