Old fish market to glitter with gold, gems and jewellery

By Damith Wickremeasekara

The former St John’s fish market is to be converted to the main gold and gem sales centre in Colombo under one of the latest plans drawn up by the Urban Development Authority coming under the purview of the Defence Ministry.

All gold jewellery shops in Sea Street will be told to move into the new centre while gem and diamond traders too will be invited to set up their shops in the one-time fish market, a Defence Ministry official said.

The building is to be renovated with plans to rent out the upper floor for a international hotel, while international gem and jewellery exhibitions too will be held at the location.

The St John’s fish market building was opened by late President J.R. Jayawardene in 1983 after the former market which was in existence for more than 100 years at the same location was demolished.

Meanwhile, shop owners occupying the upper floors of the building have been told to move out.
