A few tips on how to drape and wear a saree - a wardrobe must. Simple and elegant If the saree is a heavily worked one, keep the jacket and accessories simple. Head to toe glitz is a definite no-no.

Occasion

Consider the occasion. Most sarees are heavily-worked, multi-coloured and carry common designs. Try to choose one colour that stands out, use contrast colour jackets, and unique embellishments. For the day choose light colours and floral prints etc, while for evenings wear dark and vibrant colours – silver and gold. Avoid wearing white and cream shades for weddings.

The jacket

Try to experiment with the jacket. Do not always use the section given in the saree itself. Do the jacket in a different fabric/ colour.

Be creative

Get your saree designed and made, so it’s truly one of a kind and you’re not going to bump into anyone wearing the same saree.

You can use embroidery/ beading, appliqué and hand painted motifs to add more glamour. Your complexion, height and size should be taken into consideration when getting the saree and jacket specially designed for you.

The collection of sarees and jackets are avaliable at Haddai – No. 4, De Fonseka Road, Colombo 5.
