A viola and piano treat from Ashan and Eshatha

For all you classical music lovers, “Intimate Conversations for Viola and Piano”, featuring renowned musicians, Ashan Pillai (viola) and Eshantha Peiris (piano), to celebrate British Council’s 60th anniversary in Sri Lanka – will simply be a must-go event.

Described as a “brilliant professional”, Ashan, a Sri Lankan-born critically acclaimed British violist will perform along with Sri Lankan pianist Eshantha Peiris on Thursday, August 6, at 7.30p.m. at the Lionel Wendt. The 90 minute programme will include works for viola and piano by Bach, Schubert, Schumann, Telemann, Gavin Bryars and Weber.

The duets by the two - no frills, no gimmicks - will demand nothing less than your full attention.

Ashan, made his first-ever appearance in Sri Lanka in 1998 in the presence of Britain’s Prince Charles to mark the 50th Anniversary of Independence, as a soloist with the English Chamber Orchestra. Winner of many international prizes at various competitions including Tertis International Competition (1994), Rome International Competition (1995), the Royal Overseas League Competition (1995), Ashan made his London recital debut as a winner of the Park Lañe Group Series in 1997 and his New York debut at Carnegie Hall, Weill Hall, as a winner of the Artists International Series in the same year.

As for Eshantha Peiris, he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Performance and Composition at New York University and served as an adjunct piano instructor and as assistant conductor of the NYU orchestra. Since his return to Sri Lanka, Eshantha who has been actively involved in the local music scene, playing keyboards in the fusion-jazz band ‘Thriloka’, is also an associate conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka. He is the director of the recently founded ‘Aumkar School of Multicultural Arts.’

The concert is presented in partnership with Hilton Colombo, while The Daily Mirror and the Sunday Times will be the print media sponsors.
