Improving English debating

As a part of their continuing commitment to advance English Debating in the Country, the Debaters Council of Sri Lanka (DC) will be conducting its annual International Training Programme from August 1–14, targeting schools, universities and the corporate sector.

This year’s expert trainers, Jessica Prince and Alex Campbell have a wealth of debating experience. Canadian born Jessica had the distinction of being the No: 1 ranked debater in the world in 2007 by emerging as the best speaker at the World Universities Debating Championships that year. A two time finalist of the Canadian Nationals, she was also a grand finalist at the Cambridge IV the most prestigious debating tournament held in the United Kingdom during her time at the University of Oxford. Her coaching experience includes training the National Schools Debating teams of Canada and Qatar and also as a corporate trainer.

As the former Head Coach of the prestigious Oxford Union, Alex Campbell is the only person to make the finals of the Canadian and British National Championships. He has vast coaching experience in Hong Kong and Qatar.

Founded in 2006 by the local debating community, the DC operates on a multi prong strategy of training and advancing local debating under the British Parliamentary format (the norm for international competitions) and also provides experienced adjudicators to its members or third parties for debating tournaments on request.

They have also coached the Sri Lankan Schools National Debating Team for the World Schools Debating Championships since that year under the accreditation from the Ministry of Education. At the 2010 Championships to be held in Doha, Qatar, Sri Lanka will be represented by Sandaruwani De Silva as Captain (Bishops College), Pranjeevan Kulasingham (S. Thomas’ College), Sanjit Dias (S. Thomas’ College),Maleen Jayasuriya (Wesley College) and Kitmina Hewage (CIS)
