D.S.Senanayake College reaches new heights in Education

Mrs. Sumedha Jayaweera

The college which carries the motto "country before self" has carried out many educational development projects to keep in pace with new educational reforms set by the National Institute of Education. The transformation role of the teacher has become student centered and competency based; and the activity oriented approach today has indirectly based the teacher as a facilitator and a resource person in the learning process.

The introduction of 5E system is the fundamental element of the project. To meet the new challenge and the competency level of every student, the school has organized a set of educational development projects, beginning from grade 6 to Advanced Level together with a feed forward assessment process to strengthen the student's ability to face examinations successfully.

Analysis of the marks obtained in term tests are categorised into different groups to assess the student's level of competency. Special tutorials, questionnaires and assessments carried out by the teachers to enhance the student's standard in respective subjects from grade 6 to Advanced Level are being done.

The endeavour made by the teachers in further upgrading the standard of education has brought in good results at the G.C.E A/L with one of our students gaining third place in the island wide results of 2008, while another was placed 2nd in the Colombo district.

For the intake of the university in year 2008, 40 students have been selected for the Engineering Faculty and 8 to the Medical Faculty. In accordance with the G.C.E. O/L New Syllabus special revision sessions and discussion on model papers by lecturers has immensely helped the students in comprehending with new educational reforms. The approach conducted by the Educational Development Unit of the school has led to the success of achieving the highest record of passes at the G.C.E. O/L in year 2008.
The new education reforms which has brought in changes in the teaching process, has enabled us to use more effective methods of teaching to enhance the competency based learning process. The assistance and facilities provided by the Old Boys' Association and School Development Society has been greatly appreciated by the staff, students, and parents.

The pleasing classroom atmosphere and the model classroom selection have been very effective due to the quality inputs by parents and other associations in the school. The dedication of the Deputy Principal Education Development Mrs. Sumedha Jayaweera, all Sectional Heads, Grade Coordinators and teachers are highly commendable.

The pioneer behind the success of new heights reached in education is the principal Dr. Asoka Senani Hewage, who has been instrumental in initiating these projects.
