Wycherley moulding fully fledged youth to face challenges of tomorrow

Tradition-Education-Excellence, motto of Wycherley International School, fittingly symbolizes the cornerstones on which this learning institution of prestige is founded. Focusing on academic excellence, coupled with traditional social values of a multicultural environment, WIS has been instrumental in moulding youth of potential over the last 25 years. Reputed for its excellent UK O/L and A/L results, WIS has been producing 'stars' who have excelled in an assortment of academic spheres in top ranking universities in UK, USA and Australia.

Dedicated staff

Revealing the secret behind their success story, Kingsley Jayasinghe, Principal of WIS said, "majority of our teachers have been with WIS since its inception. They are experienced and qualified in their respective subjects and take every measure to help each and every student achieve his or her full potential. This is the main reason why WIS has been having a steady clientele over the years."

Making balanced personalities

Equipping students with a quality education on par with global standards, WIS is firmly rooted in local soil. "I'm very particular about discipline in school, the efforts of which are much appreciated by parents. For me, the Sri Lankan aspect of the school is very important, which I advocate to both the student and parent alike," he said.

Producing fully-fledged youngsters with a 'balanced personality' has been the prime task of Wycherley over the years. The success stories of many such youngsters who are presently reading for their degrees in Medicine, Law, Engineering, Finance and many more spheres in some of the most prestigious universities in the world hold testimony to this. "Our students have successfully transferred themselves to top UK universities such as Cambridge, Sheffield, Nottingham and Australian and US universities" said Mr. Jayasinghe.

ANC's ambitious venture

The recent acquisition of WIS by ANC Education Holdings is promised to be an ambitious venture in strengthening the quality of education. Several new projects including upgrading of science laboratories, computer labs and library facilities have already been spearheaded under the new management. "Infrastructure has improved tremendously under the new management. The best part of this takeover is that ANC has been able to give Wycherley a much wanted facelift whilst restoring its 'old school' personality," added Mr. Jayasinghe.

Outstanding results

'Extra attention at no extra cost' is a salient feature of WIS according to Indra Puvimanasinghe, Head of Arts stream. A pioneer teacher at Wycherley, her specialty is Economics. "No child is left out at Wycherley. Even the average student is given all means of encouragement by us to reach academic excellence," she said.

Nesta Gunasekara, is a proud teacher of Science who is behind the success of many Science students of Wycherley. "I'm proud to say that Science stream has produced excellent results over the years. Many of our gifted students have secured places in universities such as Oxford and Cambridge," she said.

Transparency

Transparency is unique to the learning culture of Wycherley with direct access to teachers by both students and parents. "The close rapport between teachers and students is a key motivating factor which helps students of WIS in achieving their ultimate academic targets. We are always there for the student and are only too happy to give a helping hand even during our free periods," said Shyama Marikkar, Teacher-in-charge of Business Studies and Commerce. Qualifying her words, Trisette Tilakaratne, a senior teacher of English and English Literature added, "We are not only teachers but counsellors and second mothers to our students. We have a considerable percentage of students speaking in many foreign tongues and as a teacher of English in the senior school, I do the best in my capacity to help them acquire language skills."

Fulfilling roles

The ethnic harmony prevailing among students of Wycherley is a very healthy and progressive sign in the cosmopolitan Sri Lankan millieu according to Indrani Seevaratnam, one of the pioneer teachers of Geography at Wycherley. "English being the link language, has helped in strengthening bonds between students of different ethnic groups. We inculcate discipline in our students at a very young age and anybody walking through the gates of Wycherley would notice this at once," she said.

A.R.M. Faaizzeen, Teacher-in-charge of Mathematics and Statistics identifies his mandate as a 'challenging yet fulfilling' one. "A subject like Mathematics is very demanding because it is a subject which 'bridges' many other disciplines and is complementary. Nevertheless I'm happy to say that we have produced outstanding results and many of my students are doing well in reputed overseas universities," he said adding that changing to the Cambridge syllabus in the A/L stream this year is also a very ambitious step taken by Wycherley.

Ruwan Iddamalgoda, Teacher-in-charge of IT views ANC's recent acquisition of Wycherley as a progressive step in extending its scope to the local education sector. "It is promised to be a gesture of value-addition to the school, reflecting positively not only in academic ventures but in infrastructure and personality of it," he said.
