Think 'green' today with Green Earth® Group

It's now the fashion to wear, think and do 'green' things and it is refreshing to know that at a time when Sri Lankan companies 'talk' about green policies at length in an air-conditioned environment that use non-green mechanisms, one company is a cut above the rest. Hearing about the concept of Green Earth® Renewables (Pvt) Ltd is a refreshing experience.

Today, as the dramatic consequences of global warming takes effect, our actions taken now, has a greater bearing on the future generation. How Green Earth® Renewables (Pvt) Ltd approaches 'Green' initiatives in a practical way, is a great example of sustainable development in this part of the world.
Green Earth®'s chairman, Susantha Pinto said," we are proud to be involved in a business to help change the future of the environment we live in. Our objective is to bring affordable greener solutions to the South Asian region".

Under the Green Earth® Company's Umbrella, the three main companies include Green Earth® Renewables, Green Earth® Technologies and Green Earth Constructions. "All these subsidiaries culminate in our eco- friendly concepts providing greener solutions for our clients" he said. " We are also moving in to plantation management, especially focusing on timber and high value crops" Mr. Pinto said with regard to their recent expansions.

Green Earth® adheres to six golden rules when it comes to building the ideal eco-friendly home. Firstly, 'working with the sun' where solar energy systems are in place that include aspects like glazing, orientation, thermal insulation, sun protection and thermal mass usage.

Secondly, the 'stack effect' ensures that natural ventilation is used to its optimum so that additional expensive ventilation like air-conditioning isn't needed. The technology used is a powerful suction effect that is created when warm air escapes from a building.

Thirdly, the thermal zoning technique makes your living spaces cooler by blocking certain sun directions and minimizing heat through design of the house. Fourthly, the embodied energy aspect takes into consideration the building materials needed to build your house and to emit less carbon to transport it.
Fifthly, using of renewable energy is highly recommended and sixth of all is recycling water.

An experience in the plantation management sector, Mr. Pinto has made use of his green thumb when it came to giving a hand to Mother Nature. "Our company has even pioneered a 'waste not, want not' policy of water recycling which we have already implemented" he said. Explaining the mechanism of rain water harvesting, he said that when it rains, the water can be collected for usage in your toilet (flushing purpose) and the grey water (used bathing water) can be collected and used for watering the garden. "Even if it doesn't rain, the system we install gives you the alternative of getting water from the main tap line" he said.

Furthermore, Green Earth® offers solar electricity (PV) for domestic use and commercial aspects like street lighting and rural electrification. The company recently embarked on an ambitious eco-community resort project in Galaha, adjacent to Loolecondera estate where the legendary James Taylor planted the first tea in Sri Lanka.

The project is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka and will house 42 eco-bungalows, in 200 acres of pristine land. The project carries international LEED certificate for Green building and will consist of all modern amenities of a gated resort community. The club house in the eco-community is called the Taylor club and the residents will be able to rent their houses for additional income while not in use.

Commenting on the project Mr. Pinto said "Taking it a step further we plant trees to offset carbon emissions in our eco-community project where we will plant 10 mahogany trees for every house/block. In this unique scheme customer will be able to recover the cost of his housing block in 18years" he said.

Together with his managing partner, Hisham Halaldeen who is a reputed investment banker based in Middle East, Mr.Susantha Pinto formed the Green Earth® Group, that consists of a state-of-the-art solar water heater manufacturing plant at their factory in Orugodawatte. The is presently being upgraded to ISO 9001 certification and the hot water storage tanks are made of high grade stainless steel which is non-corrosive and easy to maintain. The solar collective panels of Green Earth® are the largest panel area for similar products in the local market, which ensure high efficiency even in low sunlight.

"The solar water heaters which comes with 10year warranty, are available in different colors which blend in with your house design and we also give a free installation" the chairman said. "We believe in giving personal attention to each customer's needs and blend it with the nature to make it unique and viable business propositions" concluded Mr.Pinto. So make the wise decision when it comes to building your dream home and think 'green' today with Green Earth® Group, which is located at 49/1, Railway Avenue, Nugegoda.
