National Marathon will serve as SAF trials

Palitha Fernando

The ongoing National Marathon in Girandurukotte which ends today will act as the trial to pick Sri Lanka’s team for the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games Marathon. The next SAF Games will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in January 2010.

President of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) Palitha Fernando speaking to the Sunday Times said; “We will pick five men and five women and start to train them at Diyathalawa. We want to give them the best training possible and this applies not only to the marathon but the SAF Games per se.”

He added; “With this in mind we will be holding the National Senior Trials on June 27 and 28 at the Sugathadasa Stadium to pick the pool for Dhaka. This in essence means the competitors selected will have nearly six months to prepare. We have received nearly 400 entries for the senior trials and intend to pick at least two competitors for the individual events with more for the team events.” (HJ)
