Basil Rodrigo

Basil Rodrigo a former CH & FC “A” Division player, who represented the” Maitland Crescent” club for nearly a decade is now a qualified coach who rejoices in passing on his wealth of experience and knowledge to the upcoming generation of Rugby players.

Rodrigo has coached teams of the caliber of Thurstan, Mahanama and Wesley and has coached many development schools in the Districts of Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara. He was the coach of the Wayamba and Uva provinces as well.

Expressing his views on taking the game to the cleared areas in the North and East Rodrigo said that this is the perfect opportunity to promote Rugby Football in the North and East. ‘It would be best to start at school level and the only way to start any sport at grass root level is to create a genuine love for the game, and to instill a good knowledge of the basics of the sport. Once the basics and the laws of the game are inculcated in the youth then we can expect to see great results thereafter.”

He went on to add “I am prepared to assist the promoting of rugby football in the North and East. I have sponsors who are willing to provide for food and lodging. I have sacrificed a lot for the development of this great game in Sri Lanka for the past 30 years, and I’m still willing to do much more.”
