Bernie Wijesekera is An All Island JP

Senior sports journalist Bernie Wijesekera took oaths as an All Island Justice of Peace on Friday before Magistrate Wasantha Jinadasa at the Gangodawila Courts.

Bernie, who counts more than 50 years in the field of sports journalism recalls that the first World Cup cricket tournament that he covered in 1979 was sponsored by a group of friends headed by former S. Thomas’ and Sri Lanka pace bowler Mevan Pieris.

He says that when he was in England for this event he did not have a place to stay and Shaw Wilson and his wife Farina were good enough to give him accommodation.

According to Bernie he is ever grateful to people like former Times Editor Felician Fernando, late DIG A.C. M Gaffoor and ex-Timesman Prema Perera had been extremely helpful to him in his career.
