Royal coast to six wicket victory

Royal Panadura coasted to a six wicket win over traditional rivals St John’s Panadura in their 18th Battle of the Greens encounter concluded at the Panadura Esplanade yesterday.

Royal now lead the series at 2-1.

A victory for Royal was inevitable in the pre-lunch session when they had St John’s battling fighting for survival on 58 for 5. The post lunch session saw the Royalists take the upper hand further. An unbeaten knock of 61 by Sameera Chaturanga only prolonged Johnian agony.
The Johnians ultimately folded for 134 leaving the Royalist a simple target of 83 runs to make.

Earlier in the day, Royal Panadura resuming from their overnight score of 88 for 7 in reply to St John’s score of 101 made a come back.

Thanks to a 28 run partnership for the eighth wicket between Krishan Dinidu and Kavindu Ashan to end their innings making a modest 153. Kavindu top scored with a knock of 35 which included five boundaries.

The opening days play saw the Johnians recover from a hopeless situation of 4 for 3 to end on 101 due to a 72 run partnership for the fourth wicket between Sanjaya Chaturanga (37) and Chaturanga Perera (23) helping them make 101. Right arm pacie Krishan Dinidu and left arm spinner Ruchira Tharinda did the early damage with the duo in the end sharing nine wickets between them.

The 18th Battle of Sri Jayewardenapura between Ananda Sastralaya Kotte and St John’s Nugegoda concluded at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday ended in a tame draw.
Half tons by skipper Dimuth Indeewara and Thanil Gayan who put on 121 runs for the fourth wicket which helped them recover from 35 for 3 to make 205 in reply to the Sastralians score 207.
