Hong Kong rugby sevens
Lanka lose it all

By S.R. Pathiravithana

It was ‘lambs to the slaughter, followed by a falter for Sri Lanka on the second day of the prestigious Hong Kong Sevens Rugby Tournament played in Hong Kong.

After being thrashed by 59 points to nil on the first day at the hands of the mighty All Blacks, Sri Lanka put up a brave resistance but they went down to the Australian Wallaby side by 56 points to 12 with veteran utility back Radhika Hettiarachchi touching down twice.

Sri Lanka once again will compete in the bowl after inexplicably going down by 33 points to 14 to Zimbabwe with Lankan skipper Fazil Marija and Sanjeewa Jayasinghe scoring the tries.

It was an upset because Sri Lanka is ranked at number 51 on the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens rankings while Zimbabwe are placed at 56 and were soundly beaten by both Australia and New Zealand.Meanwhile all the pre tournament favourites like England and South Africa made it through. - HJ
