Land Rover dominates in Carlton 4x4 challenge 2009

By S.R. Pathiravithana

Land Rover dominated the podium at the Carlton 4 x 4 Challenge held in Tissamaharama. The event was won by Damith Nishanka driving a 1960’s Land Rover Series 2. Damith, a garage owner in Katharagama beat internationally experienced competitors from Colombo. Damith’s drive was the right mix of aggressive, flamboyant, and careful.

His knowledge of the terrain and intimate knowledge of the vehicle gave him victory over seasoned Land Rover driver Indika Sanjaya, who took second place.

Incidentally Indika was placed second at the Malaysian rainforest Challenge in 2006 and 2007. The Malaysian Rain Forest Challenge is considered one of the most gruelling 4 x 4 events internationally.

Both Indika and Damith drove Land Rover based ‘hybrids’ that they had designed and engineered themselves.

The next 4 x 4 challenge is due to be held on the 15th of April at the Lakecross track in Nuwara Eliya. A Land Rover Defender will also be competing in the Truck and Jeep event at the Fox hill Super Cross in Diyathalawa in April.
