Mateesha bags player of the month award

By S.R. Pathiravithana
Mateesha Perera

Ananda’s left arm leggie Mateesha Perera one of the best bowlers to have come out in recent times has been adjudged the most outstanding player for the month of February and bags the player of the month of the BATA Sunday Times special award category.

Mateesha in the 18 matches he has played for the season bagged 125 wickets. It includes eleven five wicket hauls. He also completed the “match-bag of over ten wickets” on four occasions.

His best effort for the season is his 7 for 47 against Dharmasoka. His second seven wicket haul was against St Benedict’s. On both occasions Ananda came out victorious.

Meanwhile at the end of count 11 of the BATA Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer contest Zahira skipper Isham Ghouse continues to maintain his lead. Isham received 2700 votes to finish on 13,020 votes while long leader Angelo Perera received 1462 votes to end on 10,753 votes.

The other placing are of less significance as the top is way ahead of them. In the contest of the outstation category Sri Sumangala Panadura skipper Niwanka Abeyrathne too hold on to his lead having received 258 votes to end on 1764 as against just 37 votes to second placed Amith Tillekeratne of Sri Rahula Kandy.

It’s a one horse race in the International Schools category with Aadhil Niyas of Gateway International having his own way. Aadhil received 365 votes to finish on 2823 votes. However, biggest surprise is the withdrawal of last year winner Malith Silva also of the same school. He has officially withdrawn from the contest. So it seems that Aadhil will have no contest at all as second placed Shanuka Peiris of Colombo International has only 56 votes.
