Golden Key workers warn of protests outside homes of directors

At the press conference

Workers of the failed Golden Key Key Credit Card Co on Wednesday warned of protests outside the homes of directors of Ceylinco Group companies if their salaries and other payments are not made before Tuesday March 10, union officials told reporters.

Officials said the workers hadn’t received salaries, overtime, and other payments for February. President of the Inter Company Employees Union Wasantha Samarasinghe said all 512 workers including security guards of the Golden Key company will stage protest demonstrations in front of houses of directors of the Ceylinco group until an assurance is given to pay their salaries or to implement a compensation package agreed upon by employees earlier in the event of their termination of employment.

He said that employees are in a dire situation as they have already lost their livelihood and the government should intervene to solve the problem of depositors and workers as it has triggered a grave economic crisis. He said 44 companies affiliated to the Golden Key Company and functioning under the Ceylinco Consolidated are facing a serious financial crisis and the future of 1,484 employees is bleak. Mr Samarasinghe vowed to stage massive protest demonstrations in front of Seylan Bank and Ceylinco Insurance as a final resort to win their demands. He disclosed that the Golden Key management had failed to deposit the EPF and ETF money of employees with the Labour Department for the last six months.
