All-Island Cadet Sports Festival revived after six years in Jaffna

North Central and North Western provinces stood out of the rest to emerge as the overall champions in Boys’ and Girls’ segments of the All-Island Cadet Sports Festival, held recently at the Duraiappah Stadium in Jaffna. From team events such as volleyball, netball and football to track and field events and march band and drill display events, the All-Island Cadet Sports Festival was revived after an lapse of six years, with the intention of building camaraderie among the cadets through sports.

While the North Central Province bagged the Overall Boys’ Championship, North Western Province claimed the Overall Girls’ Championship with notable performances. Western Province emerged as the overall runners-up of both segments. Sabaragamuwa Province accounted for the Boys’ Volleyball Championship while the Girls’ Championship was won by North Western Province. Northern Province claimed the Boys’ Football Championship, as Uva Province pocketed the Girls’ Netball Championship. The Boy’s 10km Road Race was won by Cadet N.B.K.M. Bandaranayake of Denike Secondary School, Hanguranketha, while Sergeant G.R.K.N. Senaratne of Giribawa Central College claimed the Girl’s 5km Road Race win.

North Western Province claimed the Overall Girls' Championship

Among top performers of the two-day sporting gala were five athletes who stood out among thousands of competitors who dished out their skills. Sergeant G.R.K.N. Senaratne of Giribawa Central College was adjudged the Best Female Athlete in the Senior Cadets category, while Cadet L.N.U. Kalhara of Marapola Maha Vidyalaya from Western Province and Corporal T. Kaviyalakan of Mahajana College, Jaffna from Northern Province shared the Best Male Athlete award among senior cadets. Cadet D.M.K.S. Rupasinghe of Madulla Maha Vidyalaya from Uva Province was named the Best Male Athlete in the Junior Cadets category, while the Best Female Athlete of the same segment was won by Sergeant J.A.D.M. Jayasinghe of Royal College, Dodamgaslanda from the North Western Province.

The Governor of Northern Province, Nagalingam Vedanayahan graced the awards ceremony as the chief guest on the final day, while the Director of National Cadet Corps, Major General A.P.C.R. Premathilaka marked his presence as the guest of honour, among the dignitaries representing officials the three armed forces, police and educational sectors, as well as the parents and the public of Jaffna, who contributed to the success of the two-day event with utmost generosity.
