Dr Newton A Peiris elected trustee of German Dharmaduta Society
View(s):Dr Newton A Peiris was elected unanimously by the members of the German Dharmaduta Society (GDS) to act as a trustee and fill in a vacancy on the board of trustees at a special general meeting (SGM) of the society held on Sunday, January 25, at the auditorium of the Organization of Professional Associations (OPA) in Colombo.

Dr Peiris holds academic qualifications such as MA, LLB, PhD, MBIM, MIM, gathered while studying in Prague, Berlin and London (Cambridge University). He is an attorney at law, and a JP. He is an international business consultant, director, Royal International School that has branches in Kurunegala, Kegalle, and Wariyapola, member, British Scholars Association, German Business Association, Colombo, and has been a dayaka (patron) of the Berlin Buddhist Vihara when he was a student in Berlin in the late 1960s.
The SPG which was convened for the purpose of ratification of the proceedings and decisions taken at a previous AGM (December 8, 2025) was followed by an annual general meeting (AGM) of an interim nature and the unfinished business is scheduled to be concluded at the next meeting of the AGM to be held in June 2026, where the office bearers of the GDS will be elected to serve for a period of three years.
The two meetings were well attended and chaired by the Major General Sardha Abeyratne, president of the GDS. Ven K Sri Rewatha Thero, the head monk of Scotland’s Buddhist Vihara situated in Glasgow administered pansil and delivered an anusasana. It is the first-ever Sri Lankan Theravada Vihara in Scotland.
Shenali Waduge, the newly appointed vice president of GDS, delivered the vote of thanks at the conclusion of the day’s events.
