“On the Edge” to address rising climate threats
View(s):“On the Edge” – an expert forum aimed at delivering urgent, practical solutions to address rising climate threats facing Sri Lanka’s plantations will be held on December 17 at 5 pm at Genesis.
Presented by Biodiversity Sri Lanka, Dilmah Conservation and Genesis, Dilmah Centre for a Sustainable Future, “On the Edge: Climate-proofing Sri Lanka’s Plantation Heartlands” is in response to the severe impacts of Hurricane Ditwah. With flash floods, landslides and widespread destruction that exposed deep vulnerabilities across the country’s highlands, plantation regions now face escalating climate risks that threaten worker safety, productivity and long-term viability.
This dialogue brings together leading experts including Prof Buddhi Marambe, Prof D K N G Pushpakumara, Dr Keerthi Mohotti, and Binesh Pananwela, who will offer scientific insights and operational experience on slope stability, erosion control, disaster readiness, and climate projections to help companies adopt practical, evidence-based measures to withstand future shocks. The session will be moderated by Tharuka Dissanaike.
The event will also feature a short presentation by Medhini Igoor, a researcher in the Nature, Climate, and Economy programme at Centre for a Smart Future (CSF), an Asia-focused think tank based in Colombo
On the Edge offers plantation companies, smallholders, policymakers and the public a platform to rethink and take decisive action before the next extreme-weather event strikes Sri Lanka.
