To my motherland and all Lankans…..

Wherever you live in this world, if you have a roof over your head and some food to eat, you are already one of the luckiest souls. No matter where life takes you, when a disaster strikes your homeland, your blood trembles and your heart beats faster. Because that is the country where you were born, where you grew up, and where your loved ones still live. It is the place you carry in your heart every day and night.

Each rough wave, every powerful current, every drop of rain has now left a mark on almost everybody. Homes have been damaged, destroyed, or swallowed by floodwaters. Pets have been lost to the rising tides. Valuables have disappeared beneath the water. And above all, the safety of our loved ones becomes our deepest fear and you can’t sleep peacefully. I sincerely hope with all my heart that your families are safe somewhere, even when reality reminds us that some may have been tragically impacted.

To every Sri Lankan living oceans apart – I know how heavy your hearts feel. The images we see on social media are heartbreaking. If you haven’t heard from your mother, father, siblings or partner, I know your mind aches with worry. You wish you could fly home just to hold them and make sure they are safe. I hear you completely! Because, I am one of you.

My dearest motherland, seeing the devastation you are enduring is overwhelming. I cannot imagine how you bear such agony and still find the strength to rise. Your lands, your people, your spirit, all have taken a heavy blow. Yet you continue to stand as a mother to every child you raised. I know you will rise again!

To everyone who has supported a single living or non-living being whether financially, physically, or emotionally, hats off to you. You are a true reflection of humanity.

May my motherland be free from worry and find the strength to rise stronger than before. May my family, friends, and all the flora and fauna belonging to her be safe and protected. And may our government, opposition and all politically aligned parties and foreign alliances come together with unity to rebuild our country with prosperity.

To those who have faced loss, I am truly sorry. I hope you heal – slowly yet stronger. But all I do know is we Sri Lankans have the biggest hearts, the deepest courage and the unbreakable ability to stand up as one nation.

My dear Sri Lankans – we rose after the Tsunami. We grew after 30 years of war.  And yes, we will rise again stronger, kinder and more united than ever.

Look into the warning systems

As Sri Lanka recovers from its worst natural disaster in decades, there must be concern that the government was only warned of a cyclonic storm by the Sri Lankan Meteorological Department on the day before (November 27). The forecast on the 26th merely mentioned heavy to locally very heavy rainfall across most parts of the country.

The Indian Meteorological Department did not fare any better and on November 26 forecast ‘A well marked low pressure area over south west Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of South Sri Lanka and Equatorial Indian Ocean’.

These days supercomputers and satellites enable cyclones, typhoons and hurricanes to be predicted several days in advance and why this was not possible for Cyclone Ditwah deserves urgent investigation.
