Classical and modern in SOSL’s Christmas offering

Nishantha Warnakulasuriya
The Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka (SOSL) is set to spread festive cheer with its annual Christmas Concert on December 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. at the Ladies’ College Hall. Under the direction of conductor Nishantha Warnakulasuriya, this year’s programme promises a blend of beloved classics, contemporary arrangements and the uplifting power of choral music.
Joining the orchestra are two of Sri Lanka’s celebrated choirs: Soul Sounds, directed by Soundarie David Rodrigo, and The Peterite Chorale, led by Sanjeev Dabare, bringing a richer, fuller sound to the performance. “This year, we will revert to the tradition of including choral works, whereas last year, the programme highlighted two soloists,” says Nishantha. “The presence of more than 100 performers on stage promises a powerful and uplifting experience that truly captures the spirit of the season.”
Asked about the experience of performing alongside an orchestra, Sanjeev shared, “Engaging or joining up with the SOSL has always been a very rewarding experience, which we are looking forward to.” He added, “We are quite thankful to the SOSL for inviting us to perform this year. We’re happy to join up with Soul Sounds again – it’s been a while since we’ve combined with them so hopefully, we’ll be able to engage more in the future in the same manner.”
The repertoire balances classical favourites with modern Christmas carols, catering to a diverse audience. Highlights include Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 4, Shostakovich’s Waltz No. 2, and O Holy Night (featuring choir and orchestra), as well as the Christmas Overture and Christmas Fantasy. Additionally, the orchestra has also included several new arrangements to enhance the overall audience experience.
Beyond the music, the concert carries a deeper significance. “Recent tragic events have added an extra dimension to the musicians’ commitment towards this concert,” Nishantha notes. “Some of our own musicians have been severely affected by the floods, and we will also pay our respects to all those impacted by the cyclone. The SOSL will contribute to a relief project, as our commitment is not merely to uplift our community through our music but, in times of dire need, through meaningful action as well.”
The concert also retains the audience-favourite sing-along tradition, making it an event that invites everyone to participate in the joy of the season. Whether a seasoned concertgoer or experiencing the orchestra for the first time, this festive performance will undoubtedly bring warmth, joy and the unifying power of music.
