Taijul leads Bangladesh to possible series sweep against Ireland
Bangladesh need just four wickets to complete a series sweep, as Ireland finished the fourth day of the second Test on 176 for 6, while chasing an implausible target of 509 at Mirpur yesterday. Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, who claimed four wickets in Ireland’s first innings, continued his excellent form by taking three more, bringing his Test tally to 247 on Saturday.
Resuming on their overnight score of 156 for 1, Bangladesh declared at 297 for 4, with Mushfiqur Rahim unbeaten on 53. Rahim, playing in his 100th Test, had earlier struck a memorable 106 in the hosts’ first-innings total of 476 after electing to bat. Litton Das contributed a fine 128.
Ireland replied with 265, still 210 runs adrift, with Lorcan Tucker finishing unbeaten on 75. Taijul Islam’s four wickets for 76 set the tone before he added three more in the second innings, giving him a match haul of seven. Ireland now stare at an impending defeat as the fifth and final day approaches today.
