Sri Lanka expects over 20% growth of travellers in winter
Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is hoping this winter there could be a 20-25 per cent growth in arrivals but the overall numbers for the year is expected to fall short of the 3 million target.
Industry officials point out that they continue to exert pressure on the authorities to carry out the necessary marketing campaigns as required to improve the number of arrivals.
It was observed that while the budget has looked at expanding the services and improving the infrastructure development like increasing the number of counters at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) and extending the expressways, marketing plans have not been addressed. In addition, the industry continued to complain about the lack of required workforce available in the country as more and more youth migrate en masse. A shortage of guides and required staff in various other sectors of the industry as well are issues, it was pointed out.
The winter season is poised to hold well with an improvement from the Russian charters as flights are expected from there at least six times weekly. In addition, arrivals from Eastern Europe and other traditional markets like Germany, France, UK, India and China are also expected to increase the numbers holidaying in Sri Lanka.
