Sri Lanka claim three more golds
Sri Lanka won three gold medals yesterday at the South Asian Athletics Championship 2025 in Ranchi, India with two of them coming from the relay teams after sprinter Kalinga Kumarage won the Men’s 400m event. In total Sri Lanka won 12 medals yesterday besides the three golds. They won three silver medals and six bronze medal, stretching their medals tally to remain at second place next to hosts India in the points table.
Kumarage clocked 46.21secs to win the gold medal while his team mate Kalhara Indupa settled for bronze with a time of 46.81secs in the men’s 400m on the second day of the meet.
Sri Lanka Men’s 4x100m relay team secured the gold medal with a timing of 39.99secs, pushing India to second and Bangladesh to third. Adding the third gold, the Sri Lanka Women’s 4x100m team stormed ahead of India and Maldives to clock 44.70secs in the last event of the day.
In the Women’s 400m dash Sayuri Mendis clinched bronze clocking 54.18 secs while Milantha Sampath claimed the bronze medal in Men’s Discus Throw clearing a distance of 49.35m.
Meanwhile veteran middle-distance runner Nimali Liyanarachchi continued her remarkable form, claiming the silver medal in the women’s 1500m with a strong time of 4:25.52 secs. Her experience and endurance were on full display as she battled fiercely in the final stretch, ensuring Sri Lanka’s presence on the podium in a highly competitive race.
Rusiru Chathuranga matched that brilliance by racing to silver in the Men’s 1500m with a time of 3:55.12secs, while M. Rojideen clocked 3:55.95secs to claim the bronze. Field events also showcased Sri Lankan talent. Vinodeni Lakmali demonstrated remarkable strength and technique in the Women’s Discus Throw, securing the bronze medal with a best effort of 43.01metres.
Hurdles events proved to be another area of success as Lakshika Sugandhi stormed to bronze in the Women’s 100m hurdles, crossing the line in a swift 13.98 seconds. Meanwhile, Roshan Ranathunga claimed the silver medal in the Men’s 110m Hurdles, clocking an impressive 13.90 seconds.
The meet ends today with a card of 17 events set to take place beginning from 5:00pm.
