FIFA appoints Jaswar Umar to Grassroots and Amateur Committee
FIFA, the world governing body of football, has appointed the incumbent President of Football Sri Lanka (FSL) Jaswar Umar, as a member of its Grassroots and Amateur Football Committee. The appointment comes at a juncture when the Sri Lanka men’s football team has shown a rapid growth in the recent months, which led to a thrilling 1-0 win against Turkmenistan at the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers.
His strategic approach has helped transform the landscape of Sri Lankan football at international stage, setting new benchmarks in performance and professionalism. Currently the Sri Lanka team has transformed into an outfit that stands ahead of other teams from the South Asian region, with modern management strategies and forward-thinking policies that has managed to add credibility to the game, earning international recognition.
“I’m truly honoured to have been included as a member of a committee of the FIFA. I believe football is a game that should be built from its roots, and empowering grassroots and amateur levels ensures sustainable success for future generations,” stated Umar, who joins a committee that includes 24 other members from different countries.
Umar, who completed two years as FSL President last week, becomes the first Asian to be inducted to one of its committees by FIFA, which is a rare honour, which will enable him to serve as a policy maker in grassroots and amateur football affairs globally.
