Supreme Court orders to hear writ application against holding SLR election
The Supreme Court ordered to proceed hearing of the writ application filed, precluding the conduct of upcoming election of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) under the amended Sports Regulation introduced by the incumbent Minister of Sport. When the Supreme Court, benched by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, Priyantha Fernando and Sampath Abeyratne took the fundamental right petition filed by Mohammed Fazal, an official who served under different capacities at SLR, the decision was taken observing details that contained in the writ application of the Court of Appeal. The case will be heard tomorrow.
The petitioner has noted that in accordance to the New Sports Regulation, which was adopted through a Gazette Notification issued on May 25, 2025, he would be deemed ineligible to submit his nomination or contest at the upcoming SLR elections. State Counsel Mrs Avendra de Silva, with Senior Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena PC appeared on behalf of the defendant and Attorney General’s Department. Viran Corea PC appeared for the petitioner.
